The Sign That Makes a Building a Landmark

A marquee does something no other sign does. It projects out over the sidewalk, it lights the street below it and it tells everyone within three blocks that something is happening tonight. For a theater, a performing arts venue or a community space, the marquee isn't signage on the building. It's how the building is recognized.

It's also the most customized sign type there is. No two marquees share a footprint, because each one is built to a specific facade, a specific structure and a specific era of architecture. Chasers, flashers, changeable letters, digital displays and LED lighting can all live in the same structure, in whatever combination suits the venue and the budget.

What Does a Theater Marquee Cost?

Marquees are designed to make an impact: your marquee is the face of the building, and the businesses that need one usually have a picture in their head long before they call a sign company. That picture is exactly why cost can be hard to estimate outright. Marquees have a massive range: one project may require a modest lit canopy with changeable letters above the entrance, while another replicates what was on the building in 1938, chasers running the whole way around. Both are marquees, but their cost can be separated by an order of magnitude.

Three variables account for most of the difference:

Size and Structure

A marquee cantilevers out over a sidewalk, which means these structures need heavier steel, deeper attachment into the facade and sometimes reinforcement of the wall itself.

Lighting and Display

Exposed lamp chasers, neon, LED, changeable letter tracks and digital message centers all come with different costs to build and to run. Most marquees combine several of these pieces.

New Build or Restoration

Restoring an existing frame is usually less expensive than fabricating from scratch, but only if the steel is sound. A frame with significant corrosion can cost more to save than to replace.

What Goes Into a Marquee Project

A marquee is four projects at once: structural steel, custom fabrication, complex lighting and work on a facade that's often protected. Split those across separate vendors and the gaps between them become your problem. Flexlume runs all four, so the design your board approves is the design that goes up.

Design and Historic Review

Marquees frequently sit on buildings in historic districts, where the design has to satisfy a preservation commission before it satisfies a permit office. We design to that standard from the start, working from photographs, original drawings or the building's surviving history. When the marquee is part of a larger facade project, we work directly with your architect.

Fabrication

Details disappear when the steel comes from one shop and the lighting from another. We build the panels, the letter tracks and the lamp housings ourselves, so what leaves the floor is what the board signed off on. Modern materials and LEDs sit inside a period-correct shape, so the marquee looks original, but costs a fraction of the original to run.

Installation and Structural Attachment

Installation is the part that can most easily go wrong: marquees often involve hanging several thousand pounds of material off the front of a century-old building. We evaluate what the facade can carry, engineer the attachment to it and set the marquee with our own crews, which keeps responsibility for the structure and the sign in one place.

Historic Marquee Restoration or Rebuild

Most of the marquees still standing were built between 1915 and 1940, and most have been dark for longer than they were lit. Bringing one back requires much more than a repaint, and the answer comes down to the steel.

Strip, reinforce, rewire, and reface for less than a new structure, and keep the building's history intat.

Rebuild

The steel is gone

A frame corroded past the point of repair is better replaced than rescued, down to the original profile.

Either way, the modern build is more reliable than the original ever was. LED chasers replace incandescent lamps that used to burn out weekly. Sealed housings keep water out. A digital message center can sit in the same frame as changeable letters, so a volunteer isn't on a ladder every Thursday changing the show.

Marquee Maintenance, Relamping and Long-Term Care

A dark marquee reads as a closed building, and a marquee has more failure points than anything else on the facade. Lamps burn out, chaser circuits fail, water works its way into housings and letter tracks warp, and on a venue running six nights a week any one of those is visible from the street the same night it happens.

We service and repair marquees, whether or not we built them to begin with, and we can put a maintenance schedule in place so relamping happens on a calendar rather than after a failure.

Case Study: Angola Theatre

After decades of disrepair, the Angola Theatre marquee needed more than a facelift. It needed a full rebuild. Flexlume worked with the new owners to design and fabricate a replica of the original 1924 marquee, combining classic features with modern LED chasers and digital message centers. Now the marquee lights up Main Street again, and the venue has its landmark back.
