The term "digital signage" is a little misleading, because it’s commonly used for two products with very different cost structures.
The first is an indoor screen network: commercial displays, media players, mounts and a content management subscription. Think lobby screens, menu boards and wayfinding panels. Cost is mostly hardware plus a recurring per-screen software fee, and it scales by screen count. That's interior work, and it's a different conversation.
The second is what we’re discussing here: an outdoor electronic message center, sometimes called an EMC or a digital message center. It's an LED display engineered to live outside for a decade or more. It carries a sealed cabinet, wind load calculations, stamped engineering drawings, a foundation, a dedicated electrical circuit and a permit from whoever governs that parcel.
That's why a $25,000 quote and a $100,000 quote can both be real — you and your signage partner need to speak the same language. Before you compare numbers, confirm every bidder is pricing the same product.
Three things account for most of the spread between a $25,000 project and a $100,000 (or greater) one. The display itself is only the first, and it's usually not the one that decides the final number.
Pixel pitch is the distance between LEDs on the display, measured in millimeters. Smaller pitch means more LEDs packed into the same area, sharper images and a higher price.
The right pitch depends on how far away people read the sign and how fast they're moving. A display along a 55 mph highway, read from 300 feet, doesn't need the resolution of a display 80 feet from a sidewalk. Wider pitch reads clean at distance because the eye blends the pixels together on its own. Tighter pitch earns its cost only when people get close enough to notice the difference.
This is the single easiest place to overspend. Specifying a tight pitch on a sign nobody views from under 200 feet adds tens of thousands of dollars in resolution that no customer will ever see.
Size compounds the same way. Doubling the face area more than doubles the cost, because the structure holding it up grows with it.

Local code decides more about a digital sign than most buyers expect. Municipalities regulate brightness, how long a message has to hold before it changes, whether animation is allowed, height, setback and in some cases whether an electronic display is permitted on that street at all.
The same sign can clear review in three weeks in one market and need a variance hearing in the next. Historic districts, highway corridors, landlords and design review boards each add their own layer.
Permitting is rarely the biggest line item. It's almost always the one that moves your schedule, which is why it belongs in the budget conversation early rather than after the design is approved. Code research should happen before engineering and installation work begins, because a beautiful sign that can't be permitted is a sunk cost.
An outdoor display is a decade-long asset. The purchase price tells you very little about what it costs to own.
Ask about warranty length and what it actually covers. Parts only, or parts and labor? Does anyone come to the site? A five-year parts warranty means little if a technician visit is billed separately every time a module fails.
Ask about parts availability in years six through ten. The most expensive digital sign is the one that goes dark in year seven because the manufacturer stopped supporting the model or went out of business. Replacing it costs more than buying the better display would have in the first place. A display built on Daktronics hardware carries a parts and service network behind it, which is worth more at year seven than any discount was at year one.
Then factor service response time, power draw and whatever it costs in staff hours to keep content current. Ongoing service and repair is a real line in the ten-year number, and it's the one nobody puts in the spreadsheet.

Approval cycles shorten, because the brand team reviews one spec instead of arguing about local variations. Service becomes predictable, because every location holds the same parts and the same failure modes.
It also converts permitting from fifty improvised processes into one process repeated fifty times, tracked centrally, with someone accountable when a market falls behind. That difference is worth more than any hardware discount.
