Project Background
The Angola Theatre, a historic landmark built in 1924 in Angola, New York, had long been a centerpiece of the community's cultural life. After closing its doors in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatre fell into disrepair, becoming an eyesore in the village.
Recognizing the theatre's potential to revitalize Main Street, Mayor Tom Whelan sought new owners to restore the venue. In 2022, retired educators Myra Pinker and Gary Cerne answered the call, purchasing the theatre with the help of New York State grant funding. Their vision was to honor the theatre's rich history while modernizing it for contemporary audiences.
A critical component of this restoration was the marquee, which had deteriorated significantly over the years.
Key Challenges in Restoring the Marquee Sign
Restoring the marquee presented several challenges:
- Historical Preservation: The goal was to recreate the original 1924 marquee's aesthetic while integrating modern technology.
- Structural Integrity: Decades of neglect had compromised the marquee sign's structure, requiring careful assessment and reinforcement.
- Regulatory Compliance: Utilizing state grant funds necessitated adherence to specific guidelines and approval processes.
- Project Management: Initial attempts to coordinate the restoration through general contractors and architectural firms proved cumbersome, leading Myra and Gary to seek a more streamlined approach.
Solution: A New Marquee Sign by Flexlume
Flexlume was engaged directly to design, fabricate, and install a new marquee that would pay homage to the original while incorporating modern features:
- Design: A replica of the original marquee was created, featuring a classic aesthetic with contemporary enhancements.
- Digital Message Centers: Integrated digital displays allow for dynamic advertising of shows and events.
- Lighting: Amber LED chaser bulbs were installed to mimic the vintage neon glow, providing energy efficiency and durability.
- Materials: Modern, weather-resistant materials were used to ensure longevity and reduce maintenance needs.
Flexlume's expertise in marquee restoration, combined with their responsive customer service — including facility tours and design consultations — instilled confidence in Myra and Gary, leading them to entrust the project entirely to Flexlume.
Outcome
The new marquee sign was completed in April 2025, marking a significant milestone in the theatre's restoration. While there were minor issues during the project, Flexlume addressed them promptly, reaffirming their commitment to customer satisfaction.
The restored marquee has garnered attention from local media, with Channel 2 News featuring the project in an upcoming segment. Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents expressing excitement about the theatre's revival and its potential to stimulate economic growth in the village.
